No more dark light

Was it me that day, not long ago?

My dead emptiness floated
with the reflection of the mirror
I looked back at my own dark brown eyes
a sad look
a sad face

My silence and my suffocating breath
wanted to tell me something
when all at once a sigh
gone mad from my torment
cried out
on the other side of the mirror
crying with my tired eyes

Telling me
love suppose to be beautiful
like a special scent of flower
open the door and escape
do not let him abuse you once more
.
A year later
I was looking again in my mirror
I wanted to find
whiteness of hope
a memory emptied of its sorrow
flowers to revive my smile

A year later
I saw my serene mind
playing a harp tune
and my peaceful soul
dancing with droplets of rain

Today, far away from you
my life is bliss
no more one choice
no more violence
no more terror
no more fear
no more dark light

I trust myself I am standing tall
I am hopeful of being the person I wanted to be
and of doing the things that I wanted to do
and I am still smiling

A wonderful example of a cogent and well thought out free verse poem. Opening with a palpable sense of darkness, depression and near hopelessness, the poem goes on to talk about a young woman’s journey out of a relationship steeped in abuse. For a moment I thought the poem suggested that the young lady stayed in the abusive relationship which eventually resulted in her death (the sixth stanza referring to ‘harp tunes’ and ‘dancing with raindrops’ which brought to mind clouds and heaven and therefore a state of afterlife). A reread coupled with the poem’s concluding lines negates that interpretation. Good read!
