My Own Hell

I don't feel like a person
I feel like a thing
You might not understand so I'll explain what I mean

I'm void of emotion
I don't seem to care
People around me are hurting
But I remain unaware

Empathy is what I lack,
I know this all to well
Not knowing when I'm needed
Is my own personal hell

About this poem

I'm Autistic and so I have trouble emotionally connecting with others. Not knowing when someone needs a kind word that you're absolutely desperate to give can be infuriating

These were my notes prior to reading your comment about your poem (which I very much enjoyed):

“A poem about a person whose general indifference makes them feel like they are in hell. BUT, it seems that if the individual was truly apathetic, uncaring and indifferent, they wouldn’t give a single thought to any of the negative attributes that the poem seems to condemn. I think the poem is talking about someone who WANTS to be there for others, but just has a hard time (socially) knowing how to do this. Just my take …”

It must be very difficult considering the autistic diagnosis, but keep in mind as well that it’s really hard sometimes for anyone to ‘read’ people. Your heart is in the right place BECAUSE you want to connect socially and compassionately with people. Just keep up that effort, learn from your mistakes, be patient (and positive) with yourself, and most of all don’t be hard on yourself.

… and keep up the writing. You’re really gifted at writing.
