Futile Pursuit: Excess Desires
Tammie Swinehart 1974 (Mooresville, IN)
In realms where desires intertwine,
A quest for excess, pleasures divine,
We chase ephemeral highs, so fleet,
Yet find our hearts incomplete.
In gilded halls of opulent splendor,
Where excess reigns, desires tender,
We amass treasures, one by one,
Yet still, an emptiness is spun.
The feast of indulgence, a tempting delight,
A temporary bliss, fading from sight,
For excess breeds a hunger anew,
A cycle of yearning that we pursue.
In hedonistic dances, wild and free,
We drown in pleasures, lost at sea,
But deeper still, a void persists,
As excess turns to burdensome twists.
The heart seeks more, a bottomless pit,
As if fulfillment's promise we'll never quit,
Yet the more we grasp, the less we feel,
An elusive truth we're slow to reveal.
For pleasures and excess, a transient façade,
A craving for joy that can never evade,
In their wake, a weariness takes hold,
As the chase of desires leaves us cold.
So let us pause, in quiet reprieve,
Reflect on the futility we perceive,
In seeking joy through endless spree,
And find contentment in what is simply free.
For life's true richness lies within,
Not in excess or worldly din,
In simple moments, connections true,
A different path to pursue.
Let go of the insatiable quest,
Embrace the now, find peace at rest,
For in the balance of want and need,
Lies the fulfillment for which we plead.
