Forever Is A Pair Of Overalls

Charles Edward York 1966 (Saigon, Vietnam)

Forever Is A Pair Of Overalls

Forever is a pair of overalls
You wear to go to work
It’s a job that needs
Effort and attention
Getting dirty is a given
Marriage vows are resumes
Promising affections
What we bring
And past experiences
For the sake of devotion
To someone you love.

Forever isn’t guaranteed
Watching it come to an end
Burn up in slow motion
I saw you unfold
A decade of deprivation
Neglect and insincerity
The empty I love you’s
Leaving the house
And me so far behind
My heart disappeared
In a rear view mirror.

I wear new clothes now
Bought with a chance at life
Your cruelty can’t afford
My eyes got wet from sorrow
Saturating shattered pieces
Kintsugi is the art of repairing
In gold what is broken
I apply the paint
Shiny as grace
Everywhere it hurts
And sew a new forever.
