My Cat

When all is said and all is done
I always turn to that furry one
Who's been with me through all the years
Of lonely nights and unshod tears.

He's getting old and feeble now
I should say good-bye, but I don't know how
To look into his trusting eyes...
I just don't think I know how.

Sometimes I see the kitten inside
Chasing shadows; without any pride
He's always provided a meal for me
A mouse in exchange for his monthly food fee

Last night I shooed him off my lap
I was busy with life, and needed a nap
I'll never forget that look in his eyes
A mixture of love with a bit of surprise

Please don't ever shoo away
The love that's given, day after day
When your arms are empty...what's left in your lap
Is a heart full of sorrow and more need for a nap.

Now I lay him down to sleep
But that look in his eyes, I'll always keep
To remind me to never, shoo away
A love that is given, day after day.

Sometimes the words flow like a murder of crows. They've held my secrets for the past 65-years. And sometimes they repeat them back to me, and laugh. more…
