NARROW ESCAPE

And on that fateful day,
There were no punches or slaps,
Just words heavier than rocks,
Each one cut deeper than the other,
And I felt a storm brewing.

And then I realized,
One more drop and I boil over,
But my blood shouldn't boil over,
The pleasure of anger is reserved for him,
But I couldn't hold down the storm.

And suddenly his lips were moving,
But my world shut down instantly,
Fighting the storm broke me,
My heart, mind and soul cleared,
Never have I ever been more free.

And there's no better feeling,
Than fear, worry, thrown out the window,
I smiled through my blurry sight,
As I walked through the gazing crowd,
Knowing this was the last of it.

And I felt my heart drop,
As memories I never knew I had,
Came to me in pictures and feels,
As I slowly walked into traffic,
Waiting for my pain to end.

And as I stood there,
Blinded by the lights, hooting and screeching,
Suddenly all my senses shutdown,
And I thought, that was fast,
Death was so kind to me.

And then I felt people,
Most of them angry, pulling and pushing me,
When my senses came back to life,
A woman was hugging me, probably a mother,
Imagining my mother losing a daughter.

And then my eyes started leaking again,
As the memory pictures unravelled again,
She asked for a number to call and there was,
There were numbers of people who loved me,
I felt important, loved and worthy again.

And that was my near death experience,
For a man that laughed as I broke and cried,
What a waste it would've been,
To not have seen the person I am today,
A light in the dark for the world, worthy.

And I finally found love,
Self love, it fills my space with golden hue,
You can't light their candle, if yours is out,
I can love deeper and without fear now,
Because I always love me first.

About this poem

Based on a true story, this poem tells the story of a person escaping their abuser. It shows that the abuser doesn't care whether they live or die. If they don't, why should your life end for him or her. Leave. Live. Hard to do but it's the only option.
