Leaves

The annual hecatomb begins.

Veins
     once full of life
          bleed into red
               into death.

Curled by cold
     their bodies
          fall through fall air.

Loss
     upon loss
          ushered into doom
               by applause.

Is our joy cruel?

Is our awe at the end of so many
     appalling?

Sometimes
     beauty hides
          in suffering.

I love and hate this poem at the same time because I also wrote about leaves this month, but I think yours is better than mine! You capture a similar level of depth from nature observation that I wanted but with a third of the words and triple the amount of discipline- something I am working on achieving in my own work. I really loved this poem, I hung on to every word and it lingered with me long after voting concluded. We may have a slightly different outlook on what the humble "leaf" has taught us, but I sincerely believe this is an excellent poem.

I would love to see more of your writing, I hope you compete next month. I think I would benefit greatly from learning your style. Keep writing!

Loved the hell out of this poem: the description of the leaves succumbing to the autumn environment is amazingly vivid. Still trying to associate the hecatomb to the poem though? Still, excellent work ...
