Star Rider

Dad bought a horse when I turned seven
I thought he came straight from Heaven
I prayed for one since I was five.

Star and I became best of friends
We flew over fields like the wind
How that horse could make me feel alive.

One day, "Don't ride" My father said
"The weather's getting pretty bad
And you know how lightning makes him jump"
.
I looked up and said, Okay
But I went riding anyway
When the lightning sounded, I got dumped.

Falling off, I bumped my head
I felt the warmth and saw the red
To weak to make it home alone.

But Star stood faithfully by my side
Waiting until I again could ride
Then safely he carried me back home.

He died the year I turned eleven
I figured God needed him back in Heaven
Now he's racing clouds across the sky

But he still swoops down on mighty wings
So I can ride him in my dreams
Once again across those fields we fly.....

About this poem

I was fortunate as a child to be raised with horses. My love for them continues today...
