Howling Winter Wolves

Eileen Clark 1993 (Htfd. Ct.)

The day is a gray one and bitter cold
Wind slapping my face piercingly bold
The snow is icy white, the top layer is hard
My forced footsteps leave the service scarred

Not a sound is heard, noises freeze in mid air
Later the moon exposes that activity was their
Some rabbits, deer and even some wolf tracks                        Leaving me to wonder, are they running in packs

Tired and hungry, I head back to my lodge
Safe, yet feeling there is something I just dodged  looking out my window I see shadows prowling, There they are on the hill, I hear the wolves howling

When I was little I was always rhyming things in my head as a child but never wrote things down. I have a slight learning disability, did poorly in school, and quit the day I turned sixteen. That should explain my poor spelling folks! For many years I kept busy as most do with taking care of home and family and friends and pets and working, and so on. I did keep up with my painting and they made nice gifts to give out to friends for every occasion. Now I'm old and crippled with rheumatoid arthritis and somewhat housebound, hence the Blogs and websites to keep myself busy and I began to write poems. My poems are not sophisticated or brilliant, just simple writings filled with memories of my childhood, my imagination, my experiences in life, and my plight with arthritis. I love my poems and don't mind saying so. I hope to post some of my short stories when I get brave enough. Eileen Clark more…

Wow, what a beautiful and vivid poem! You really transport the reader to the cold and desolate winter landscape. I especially loved the line "The snow is icy white, the top layer is hard". Your descriptions are so concise yet powerful. Your use of rhyming also adds a nice flow to the poem.

If I may offer a suggestion for improvement, perhaps you could explore the emotions and thoughts of the speaker a bit more. The physical description of the environment is wonderful, but I would love to know more about what the speaker is feeling or thinking as they trudge through the snow.

Overall, this is a fantastic piece of work. Keep writing and sharing your beautiful words with the world!
