I Wish

I Wish
By Nancy Rodriquez

I wish I could take you in my arms for an embrace,
even though the end of our relationship was in disgrace,
I wish I could soothe all of the pain we have been through,
plan for tomorrow too,
and escape the torture in our souls,
give you all of the love my heart can bestow,
I wish I had never hurt you in the first place,
which in part led you to leave my mistakes,
I let you down when you needed me the most,
I wish I could take away your pain,
make our lives better  and for all to be okay,
I should have been there on that day,
instead of living in shame and dismay,
I wish I had taken accountability much sooner than I did,
no wonder apologies were falling on deaf ears,
you had warned me to be honest and not fib,
and perhaps the sadness we have felt this past year,
would not have been this way,
I wish we both could forgive and also forget,
save all of this worry and fret,
and you would love me more than ever before.
