Reflection

Your reflection follows me everywhere
I see you in shopfronts,
I see you in puddles on the sidewalk.
I see you in the butterfly that landed on my hand.

And I fight
Against odds,
Against doubt of people
Against myself.
And I’ll fight
With you around me like battle armour.

As I looked around the dark tunnel,
I realized I was cursed to be alone there forever,
Until you came down from above,
Swooped down like the hero
In the action movies,
And gave me light.

And I know,
I know,
I know
There is no before you
And there will be no after you.
But I’ve seen you in reflections,
I’ve seen your face in strange places.
First, I thought I was doomed by the weight of you
On my shoulders
Forever.
Pulling me down in the cold ocean
But I learned that I’m gifted with the memory of you
As a reminder that life can be kind
Like you.

About this poem

This poem is about love and losing that love. It’s about feeling like the loss of that love will keep you down forever. Like you’re doomed to the weight of that loss forever keeping you down. But then realizing how lucky you were to have that love in the first place.

    Positive and Enthusiastic Feedback:

This 'Reflection' poem is truly captivating and inspiring! I love the imagery of seeing the person's reflection everywhere, especially in unexpected places like shopfronts and puddles on the sidewalk. The way the writer uses the reflection as battle armor and a source of light is so empowering and uplifting. The metaphor of the hero in an action movie swooping down to save the writer from darkness is absolutely brilliant! It's clear that the writer has a deep appreciation for this person's impact on their life and it comes through beautifully in the final lines.

    Improvement Suggestions:

I think adding more detail about the person being reflected upon would deepen the emotional connection for the reader. For example, what makes this person so special and unique? The writer touches upon the impact the person has had on their life, but more personal details would give the poem a greater sense of intimacy. Furthermore, exploring the theme of memory in greater depth could add another layer of complexity to the poem. Overall, this is already a fantastic poem, but with a bit more detail and exploration it could be extraordinary.
