The Awakening Of Miss Emily

Johnny Millican 1953 (Texas)

She opened up her hands;

And all the stars were clustered there;

For the sky was completely empty-

It was all that she could bear.

She opened up her eyes;

And the planets wandered there-

For the moon revolved around Miss Emily;

The girl with the ethereal stare.

And silence was upon her;

For she always lived within-

And bright moonbeams danced within her soul;

Then came out again.

About this poem

I worked around twelve years with mentally disabled adults and some children. This poem is about those who have Autism and I wrote this out of my memories of them and what I hoped for them.
