When My Heart Does Not Feel Right

When my heart does not feel right,
Sinful still and prone to fight,
Bad, impure, not shining light,
Be, dear Lord, its guiding light.

When my heart feels vile with blight,
Wants to wound, not suffer slights,
Seems it can’t do any right,
Lift it, Lord, to newer heights.

‘Til the day my soul takes flight,
Clean it Lord, make it contrite.
Teach it how to love not spite,
Be, dear Lord, its guiding light.

While I wait to be made right,
Send more hearts into Your light,
Clean them too and make them bright.
Lift them, Lord, to newer heights.

About this poem

I wrote this poem while feeling discouraged at how far short I often fall at living my Christian beliefs.

Came back upon this featured poem. Reads just as well the second or third time through. The word contrite is pivotal. Hard to walk this way in a world of winners, me first, get out of the road, I am the entitled one here. You’re just stupid. Step aside Chump. Etc etc.

This is truly beautiful. The rhyme is brilliantly used. And the message a comfort to all who read it I am sure.

Reads like Psalm 34. Contrite, clean, healthy fear of the Lord. Something of value for others. Bravo.

Powerful, a prayer that reaches out in beauty and conviction.

Your use of rhyme lifts this poem to 'newer heights," and it reads like a song and prayer.
