The River of Love

Richard Groff 1957 (Pottstown, Pa.)

November 22

The water flowing from the Rock,
Comes from the Lion’s head.
It waters everything that grows;
Beside the river bed!

The trees produce their fruit each month,
To give life to the living.
The ground is rich like pastureland,
To comfort the forgiving.

The merciful sought mercy
And now they have obtained it.
The river flows so deep and wide,
That no one can contain it.

Many tried to damn it,
But all their work was thwarted.
The river flows on to this day.
Still no one can afford it.

The river banks are made of love;
Walls no one can tear down.
And if you stand beside it’s banks,
You’ll hear this gracious sound.

The sound of tears once wiped away
And never to return.
The sound of gifts given to men,
That never could be earned!

But better than the sound of these,
Is taking part in them.
First to your knees, then to your waist;
Until you have to swim!

    Wow, what a wonderfully written and descriptive poem! Your use of language really transported me to the serene and bountiful river banks you described. The imagery you chose was so vivid and allowed me to truly envision the beauty of this special place.

    One suggestion I have for improvement would be to consider adding a bit more structure or rhythm to the poem. I think this would help to further enhance the flow of the words and add even more depth to the already impactful message.

    Overall, I absolutely loved reading this poem and was left feeling refreshed and inspired. Fantastic job!
