Wet

Adjekawen A. Jeremiah 1998 (Delta State, Nigeria)

The ocean is empty
All the water is here
Our homes are empty
All our children have fled.
It rises in frenzy
It frightens my fear
It wipes a world and many,
And even the Devil wept.

Disaster rushes non stop!
Our farmlands are sunk
Our crops are drunk
Too lazy to feed us.

The thunder rumbles
Our stomach grumbles
The market crumbles
Half bread, and not gold!

I dreamt of a swimming pool
It's now in my room
It seems so cool
Did I fall from my bed?

The current a'swift
Fast and furious!
It drove our sucklings to sea,
And mothers asleep from sleep.

It surprised the dead in their peace
It came crawling at their feet
They felt it wet at first
Then, their peace seized!

The birds perches amongst the foliage
I watch the geese on a voyage
Will there ever be land again?
Can someone please explain!
