The Things You Vow to Keep

Your emotions are a mill stone
Entangled around your heart.
Pulling you deep and deeper
Into your blackest part.
Your emotions they are real;
Both the pleasure and the pain.
Though truth is not in them,
You let them soak like rain.
You know you are not trapped
In the darkness and the deep;
Your cage is made entirely
Of the things you vow to keep.

You say that you are spiritual,
And yet you reject the light.
You claim you’re not religious,
But your rituals are your delight.
You see yourself rejected.
Injured. Dying all alone.
But buried deep within you
The truth screams to be known.
You know you are not trapped
In the darkness and the deep;
Your cage is made entirely
Of the things you vow to keep.

The white wolf and the black
They are different, but the same.
Both came to destroy you,
And you know its name.
Born in a world of darkness,
As every one has been;
There is only One who
Can deliver you from sin.
You know you are not trapped
In the darkness and the deep,
Your cage is made entirely
Of the things you vow to keep.

To look within the soul
And count the battle scars,
Blinds what lies beneath,
Enforcing your cage’s bars.
To see yourself a wretched man--
Forgiven--do you not see?
That is why Jesus died.
He died to set you free.
You know you are not trapped
In the darkness and the deep,
Your cage is made entirely
Of the things you vow to keep.

    "The white wolf and the black
    They are different, but the same.

    Both came to destroy you"-- Brilliant.

    We are an uphill climb in both directions, through the snow with a one-horse open sleigh, that much is for sure. You inspire to me create, Linda, and create I shall this lovely Sunday morning. Thank you for crawling inside my creative mind and giving it a kick. You rock.

      Thanks Steve. I often get inspiration from the prose of others. This particular poem was written to a friend who sees out better than in—though he would vehemently disagree with me on this point.

    We get inspirations from everywhere. Let me guess 'Sometimes tomorrow, is one day too late'? :)

      Yes, that line inspired a poem. You're right, we do get inspiration from everywhere.

    This is very powerful Linda! You've put into words what I seem to be going through at this very time. And you captured it beautifully with your poetic form. I think some poems get a little short-changed when people are going through the voting process, because it's hard to catch the 'truth' behind a poem with a quick read. This is a great poem.

      Thank you so much! I also loved your poem. The last line inspired me to write a poem--I credited you and your winning poem in the "About this Poem" section.

    It shows how some think earthly things are more important than ever lasting life, and how the choices we make will affect us in the end.
