EYES IN THE NIGHT

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

Red eyes in the horrid night
Watching as you're walking by,
Unaware of terror watching
On this night when you may die.

Predators human and inhuman
Watching every move you make,
Hoping soon to feast upon you
With every silent step you take.

Leviathans and tiny imps
All have evil designs upon you,
Slurping, slinking, slithering
Gleaming foully 'neath the moon.

Glowing eyes within the shadows
Hiding carefully from your vision,
Vampires, ghouls, and even zombies
All of them just newly risen.

Swooping batlike just above you
Or slinking slowly 'cross the ground,
Hoping soon to catch up with you
Then to quickly take you down.

Half an hour from your home
But can you reach it soon enough?
Or will gigantic shoggoths swoop down
To grab you in talons to take you up.

In the dark and evil night
Only horrors are heading your way,
Hoping soon to overcome you
Before you're rescued by the light of day.

Shrieking fills the wretched air
Terror charging straight toward you,
As you reach your home's front door
Will you manage to get safely through?
