AROUND A BLOOD-STAINED ALTAR

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

Abominations are prancing
Around a blood-stained altar,
A fallen priest chants evil words
Without daring to ever falter.

Atrocities keep on twirling
Performing a doom-cursed dance,
Around the blood-stained altar,
As though in some demonic trance.

Witches, goblins, warlocks
All are dancing to the Devil's tune,
Swirling around like dervishes
Beneath a blood-soaked moon.

Prehistoric monsters shriek
As they start racing forward,
Shrilling to the cavorting crowd
Upon this night most torrid.

Imps, and gremlins, Wendigos
Cavort around a magic circle,
Claws and fangs all razor-sharp
And tails so hetroceracal.

Manticores and Babadooks
Joining in a monstrous chanting,
As around the blood-stained altar
Hobgoblins and elves start ranting.

Beneath the sneering moon above
Barbarities keep circling round,
Around a blood-stained altar
Just outside the nearest town.
