BENEATH THE LIGHT OF THE MOON

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

Beneath the light of the moon
Capering figures are prancing,
Shaking and twirling around
Like they are St. Vitus dancing.

Demons, ghouls, and goblins
Convulse to an evil tempo,
Beasts of all persuasions dance
Raising their voices to bellow.

Phantoms, ghosts, revenants
Whirling to a voodoo beat,
Swirling, swaying, sliding
Throughout the darkened streets.

Upon the blood-stained roads
Sinister figures are twitching,
Like liners out on a stormy sea
Canting, circling, and pitching.

Beneath the light of the moon
Great behemoths are shambling,
While around in gentle circles
Small imps and elves are ambling.

Out in the monstrous night
Agitated creatures begin to lurch
To a tom-tom's rapid beating
Dancing around a blasted birch.

Black-caped forms prowling
Around the shifting shapes,
Whirling, twirling, twitching
As though all sanity has escaped.

Beneath the light of the moon
Morbid fantasies ever abound,
As horrors of every form and size
Pervert this doom-cursed town.
