THE BACKSIDE OF THE WORLD

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

Australia is the backside
The backside of the world,
They say this is the backside
The backside of the world;
The talers sang songs of woe
And the pipers even piped it,
That on the 2nd of March this year
The voters really wiped it.

Now little Johnny Howard
Is sitting on the throne,
So much for our democracy
We know those dreams have flown;
He's making up tall tales now
About the old regime,
He says, “Ten billion bucks in debt"
We think his lies are obscene.

He's bullying the unemployed
Just like Old Fraser did,
He's cutting off the dole now
At least for Paxton kids;
He says, "No more money
Unless you work like slaves,
"Bring back the ninety-hour week
And Australia will be saved."

About this poem

Actually, it was Paul Keating, while still prime minister, who referred to Australia as, "The A***hole of the World!" Little Johnny Howard simply made us all feel that we were.
