OUT IN THE NIGHT

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

Out in the sinister night
Preternatural beings prowling,
As through the horrid darkness
Unseen terrors are growling

Mischievous figures are stalking
As you walk the streets all alone,
Unaware you are being followed
As you head towards your home.

Predators are lurking nearby
Hiding in the monstrous shadows,
Planning to leap out at you soon
As the last hint of light quickly goes.

Destructive beings are out hunting
Anything foolish enough to breathe,
As the terrible night is descending
All hope for survival surely leaves.

Malicious mischief-makers move slowly
Ever slowly as they head in your direction,
Keeping carefully just out of your sight
Despite casting a menacing reflexion.

Out in the torrid night
Baleful figures encroaching
Upon your personal space
As midnight is approaching.

Baneful cawing is echoing
Throughout the awful skies,
As with a loud beating of wings
Something your way swiftly flies.

As you start to run for safety
Shrill shrieking is filling the air,
In the distance, you see your house
But is there still time to reach there?
