Analysis of Alice Munro: succinct splash
Douglas Blair 1951 (London)
Our lauded writer
Has short tales
Speaking hugely.
The likes of “PASSION”.
Summer job up Hwy 7.
Lakes, cottages
And one in particular.
Grace takes a shine
To middle aged couple.
Their Son takes a big shine
To Grace, sans the fireworks.
We shall wed, he says
When things are right.
Grace can only wince.
But she meets another, a son in law.
Dan the physician
The capable drunk, impulsive.
They take a Thanksgiving drive
For feast supplies.
But then the gravel roads
The bootlegger
Grace left in the car
While men gab and gab.
Back driving.
(Grace has no license.
But takes a whirl at it.)
Some touch, laughter, lust
Enchantment?
Dan drops her off.
Drives away without comment.
Just a smile.
She watches longingly.
Evening radio news reports
A convertible smashed against
Concrete bridge support.
Driver destroyed.
DUI and DOA.
