Michael Drewes was born in Germany and moved with his family to Mexico City at age fourteen, where he lived for twenty-six years. His youthful interests centered on drawing, sculpting and designing buildings. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Architecture and his Masters in Art History from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, and his Ph. D. in Architectural History from University of Kaiserslautern, Germany. Michael Drewes, from Germany, lived in Mexico City for twenty-six years. He was interested in drawing, sculpting and designing buildings. Drewes became curious about music in his mid-teens and learned to play the cello in school at that time. It was his only formal music training. As he started college, his mild interest became more intense, and he studied music theory, harmony and composing on his own. Musical ideas began to come to him, and he would write them down, sometimes with the aid of a neighbour's piano, and sometimes right from his head to paper - even symphonies - which he never heard, since orchestral facilities were not within his reach.

Lobgesang

Die Berge knien am Uferrand,
geliebter Fluss, andächtig nieder.
Du schlingst dein heit'res Liebesband
um die Gemeinschaft frommer Brüder.

Kein Wesen bleibt vor Freude stumm.
Der Wälder Orgel voll Akkorden
braust festlich ein Präludium ...

Stromauf

Ritzend wie das Glas der Diamant
kerbt der scharfe Kiel die klare Flut,
und das Wasser quillt hervor wie Blut
aus dem Schnitt von ungeschickter Hand.

Langsam nimmt das Schiff stromauf die Fahrt,
Wiese, Baum und Haus schwebt still zurück. ...

In die Fremde, in die Weite

In die Fremde, in die Weite
eilest auf geschwinder Welle,
kleiner Bach, durch sommerhelle
Wiesen und im Silberkleide

lauer Nächte, und die schnelle
Wolke gibt dir das Geleite
über deiner Heimat Schwelle
bis ans Tor der weiten Welt.

Putrefactus ero in aeternam

Putrefactus ero in aeternam.
Et corpus meum in terram descendet.
Ut anima mea de stupiditatibus mundi requiescat.
Et accipe, Domine, meam animam
in tuibus coelestibus emptionis medibus.
Amen.
Putrefactus ero in aeternam.
