Ode to Evolution

Some say it’s evolution; some say it’s Adam & Eve—
There’s so much controversy ‘bout what we should believe.
The diehards go with science where faith does not apply;
The religious shout the Bible and none will even try
To reconcile the difference, or even take a look
At something that might not involve the test tube or the Book.

We surely are not fish or fowl or creepy things that crawl,
Don’t fit the mold of other life upon this earthy ball,
So science says our ancestors were monkeys, like as not,
But if you think about it, there’s really not a lot
Of traits between the species to indicate that’s true
Except that we have hands and feet, and monkeys all do, too.

Now man can lie, and man can steal and cheat upon his wife,
And man can think and dream and work toward a better life.
A man can treat you like a prince, or act like a spoiled brat.
And man can sing and paint and build...but monkeys don’t do that.

There’s no two people look alike; we’re tall, short, fat and lean,
Our skin is white and red and black and all shades in between.
We’ve lots of hair or maybe none; and all have their own name.
How could we come from monkeys?  All monkeys are the same!

Now what of Adam and of Eve--(and that old talking snake)
They had two boys, the Bible says, so how’d they procreate?
They married...who?  Some girls from... where?  So are we to believe
That God did not create ALL men, but just our Adam and Eve?
 
Perhaps some pioneers were dropped off by a UFO—
An early alien version of TV’s “Survivor” show.
That sure explains a lot of things—like where we got our brains
To get from horse and wagon days to buses, cars and planes.
 
No, you cannot convince me that we have just evolved
Though we will never know for sure; the mystery never solved.
So we’ll fight all those verbal wars that we should never start—
And we know monkeys won’t do that—they’re simply much too smart!
