Island

I am an island,
   but I didn't know.
It wasn't until the flood waters
came rushing in and there was
no one in sight for my rescue
that the realization came to mind.
There were no showers of planes,
   no waves of boats,
no rumble from a submarine hitting sand,
Just the sound of the water submerging
   every inch of my land.
