You Thought I Couldn't
You thought I couldn't love you any deeper than the well.
Yet time has dug rock-bottom
and is digging deeper still.
You thought I couldn't know you any better than the truth.
Yet time has shown probity
and is showing better couth.
You thought I couldn't praise you any higher than the stars.
Yet time has lifted standards
and is lifting higher bars.
You thought I couldn't want you any greater than the gold.
Yet time has built-up value
and is building greater wold.
You thought I couldn't feel you any closer than the skin.
Yet time has touched spirit-core
and is touching closer-in.
You thought I couldn't see you any clearer than the sun.
Yet time has raised dim shadows
and is raising clearer dun.
