The Apples In His Eyes

A great bear shadowed over me
Loping through heaven
Camouflaged in clouds.
Floating down to the old porch swing
And landing on my face.
Its creeping softness
Rolled across my cheeks
Then headed for the apple trees
That abound around our place.
In rustled leaves and crunches
Apples disappeared
I hid behind my blanket
Tight against my chin.
I'll never peek at the midnight bear.
Never seek his face.
The night will turn to nothing
The sun will rule this place
While songbirds nestle in the grape.
