Summer Night

Stale beer stains the picnic bench
With ringlets round abandoned desires
Wrinkled franks wither on the grill
Like wet firecrackers exciting no one
Grownups recline in sagging lawn chairs
Assessing ten man softball play
Or minnows caught in a paper cup
By boys in rolled up Sunday pants so wet
Earning mama's ire and grampa's smile
Sit and Dry and Wait
Wait to capture fireflys in flight
Wait to burn marshmellows on a stick
We did not want the day to end
Weary lids betrayed us watching Mary dance
We found ourselves in bed
Love wrapped against the night
