Misplaced Trust

The "real you" I've come to know is not the one I love.
I must have seen, through rosy glass, a phantom turtledove.

The facades of trustworthiness have shattered in the light.
I must have placed my confidence with inauthentic blight.

The character of fine virtue appears to be a hoax.
I must have posited my faith with an unholy ghost.

The sincerity I perceived was prevarication.
I must have shut my eyes to fact and this aberration.

The kindness once so freely shown now looks ulterior.
I must have been vulnerable to faithfully adhere.

The loving thoughts warmly expressed were chosen to deceive.
I must have wanted you to care to mindlessly believe.

The solemn promises given were ill-considered oaths.
I must have heard selectively to pledge my loyal troths.
