Graveyard Lovers
It is cold tonight, as you knock
On the cousin of Death's warm window-
With one of Winter’s stones.
You say-December 9 of 1849-
And you shall be
Nineteen only
Four
Minutes more!
I whisper loud:
Leonard!
Silence!
My father will be sure
To kill you if he sees
You out in the night's Freeze!
Yet I see
Dreams
Of Romeo
Flash
Across
Your cold spectacles.
A Giggle dies beneath the Hand I would give
Him in a minute-If I could save him from Its Chill!
Close your eyes! Why?
A Smile forces me to comply.
At the graveyard, we will
Drink white wine
In Moon’s lovely light!
Two Glasses pour
Themselves into Hands;
Tangled in a Twist!
Time flows by in the Bliss
Of Lives so short!
You say:
I want to watch you wearing White-
For though it now hurts these Eyes
To see Light – thy Kiss holds
Sun and Moon for me –
You are my Immortality!
I look with a frown,
At a second Glass drowned-
Or was It downed?
I've found-
I've told him a Secret
Of mine that burns:
I am Death’s cousin: Curse!
All who come to love me
Will soon play Host
To Death wearing a coat
From a child of fourteen
Years; So
You shall live longer-
If to me you stay a stranger.
Our Glasses empty themselves
Three times in Time’s cruel race.
I look upon your Despair, longing to erase
The lines
Beneath your blurred eyes.
You will not ask me to be brave.
I say the Words;
Though
I know
They will shorten
Your life-or worse:
I will be Your Woman
In White!
Together, we will never die.
Tonight-
I am Your River!
-And You will be Her Shimmer,
As They flow on Shores Aglow
With Love’s Immortal-Sighs!
Just give me one Promise
Love: Be not;
Be not-the One to die!
An empty Bottle of Wine
Lies behind this River warm-
And free-
For a season;
From Her Fright-
By the Master
Of Her Laughter,
Her Mind,
Mine!
Universe!
Let there be no Curses!
I shan't write Death Verses!
Oh, what delight!
Only Graveyard Lovers
Intertwined!
