Crash of the Deans

It was sunny when the president spoke
in his Renaissance robe.
The graduates --
no portfolios clutched like dowries --
wore shades.
On the stage, the deans applauded.
Except one who actually grinned.
He had a mustache.

That's when it happened,
while the president spoke,
while camcorders ran.
The deans, smiling and majestically robed,
fell row by row like a strange chain of boy bands.
Now a mess of legs and tassles.
All but the mysterious grinning dean
and the president still speaking.

The graduates, with their shades,
passed the champagne.
