An English Teacher
Her brown eyes
stare at me, knowing
more that anyone could
in a single instant.
She draws the words of others
underneath my sight,
and wields them like a brush,
painting a new picture.
Her knowledge of literature
lights everything she does,
always knowing that everyone
can hold their own pencils.
With tender gentleness
she opened my eyes
to things I had never seen,
things I failed to notice.
Now, like a child fresh out of school,
I must pay attention
to the words
as they are sculpted into reality.
