My Little Man
With eyes that gleam reflections of the wonder held in youth.
Spontaneous screams, a joyful sound, care not of adult couth.
I watch as every passing day he discovers things to do.
I yearn to reach out and hold him yet he’d rather hold my shoe.
The fear it grips inside me as I watch him learn to stand.
He might fall and bump his little head, so I reach our booth my hands; and sure enough he tumbles and rolls back upon the floor.
Surprised he looks expressionless, yet gets up to try some more.
“I don’t feel well”, screams his crying eyes as a fever warms him through.
Was it a teaspoon or a dropper full, I forget now what to do!
To tell me, “I feel better Dad” he reaches out his hand.
Relieved I gaze into his eyes. How can I make him understand?
I hug him every chance I get, we kid around and play.
At night I’m close beside him and I wake him up by day.
He knows I’ll change his diapers and I feed him all I can.
How can a simple Father make his baby understand?
The mornings not a morning without him close to me.
A sunset holds not beauty unless baby’s there to see.
The love that grows inside me I will never understand nor can ever I express the love felt for my little man.
