Le Lait de serpent

Le serpent est si vieux, si voisin de la mort,
Qu’il ne sort presque plus de son triste repaire,
Où, n’ayant désormais que l’ennui pour compère,
Il végète enfoui comme un ancien remord.

À la longue sa faim s’irrite et s’exaspère,
Mais une herbe laiteuse et d’un facile abord
Nourrit l’infortuné reptile qui se tord,
Et lui verse l’oubli de son passé prospère.

Aussi, quand le soleil le galvanise un peu,
Il se traîne auprès d’elle en rampant comme il peut,
Et, tout las d’avoir fait ce voyage d’une aune,

Le pauvre vieux serpent famélique et gelé,
Avec des succions de vampire essoufflé,
Pompe et bibe le lait de la plante à fleur jaune
