Before Then - After Now

Two people so scared to lose what they never could. By pale January daylight, not as some would think. In romantic frosted twilight, the time just seemed so right, before then.

Hearts held hands with our souls and out they went on a stroll. After now, I look frantically around but they’re nowhere to be found.

Unlike those ships, our lips met with a passionate kiss and off our course we strayed to the place we thought we would forever stay, before then.

Before then and after now that kiss we will miss. Before then and after now our minds will take the wheel and tear us apart I fear.

Before then and after now we look back at our future and ahead at our past. Before then and after now, if it’s not true love nothing we say can make it last.

Too much suspicion, how we started before then, after now the same will cause the end. Phones ring and excuses bring us to wonder how we made it, before then.

After now we’ll wonder how it all got so complicated, illustrated, and why we ever consummated.

Now we find ourselves in different days, pale light has turned to a muddy haze. That twilight casts a longer shadow on the ground instead of the sky we once looked to follow around.

As days and years pass, after now seems much before then. As I change everyday, you remain the same. As love finds its way into my heart time and time again, yours is always the
best.

As sure as I am there is someone out there to take your place, there never will be. Before then and after now are relevant to ones sense of fate.

How time fills these spaces with loving memory is how I wish to remain. Even if it was not meant to be, before then and after now, no love will ever feel the same...

Numi

"Numi" is the pen-name I adopted in 2007 after a friend gifted me a copy of The Essential Rumi; by Coleman Barks. After reading some of my works, it was suggested that it reminded them of the works by Rumi. In no way do I align myself with this Great Master Poet, but I do feel a deep connection to his poetry, and the book of Essentials was my constant companion during a 5 year saga, where I was stranded in the Amazon Jungle of Peru, from 2010-2015. Everything in my collections were written during a 4 year period, 1999-2003. more…
