What Resides Within

I'm staring out from shadows
Peeking through the blinds
Witnessing atrocities
And breathing all the while

I'm canvased in hushed darkness
Hidden in the brush
Where tears are cried alone
And there is no thing as touch

I'm found amidst the abyss
By a man I've seen before
Approaching with a solemn oath
To bring me to the core

I take his hand in darkness
And he walks us through the night
I stop to look at where he points
And see a boy in light

He looks so familiar
Yes, I know this boy well
His soft face and features
Remind me of myself

I drop down to my knees
And finally face the truth
My misery began
When I turned my back on you

The tears begin to flow
As I ask for his forgiveness
Then he says a few soft words
With such heartbreaking innocence

They graced my soul so direct
I knew the words were true
I can't believe he said to me
"I still love you"

As the last moment falls
And I'm left with all my shame
The boy grants me freedom
From the burden of my name

And then my eyes creaked open
And I knew it was a dream
I walked out of my house
And cried a thorough stream

Yet, from thin air I heard a voice
From a gentle breeze blown in
And that whisper said to me
"The boy resides within"
