Not so happy valentine

I'm really not romantic, it's something that I'm not
But valentine's was coming so I'd show I’d not forgot
I bought a bunch of roses on sale for 50p
I conjured up a lovely meal to give him for his tea
But those of you that know me will know there is a twist
When he sat down to eat it I realised what id missed
I'd started with a menu I'd found while watching telly
For chicken, veg and mushrooms served with cranberry jelly
A trip to shop at Aldis, a bargain there I sought
Some broccoli, carrots and onions, was what from there I bought
I found some bits of chicken, on sale as past their date
Would surely be delicious when served up on his plate
So now began the cooking, but time was passing by
I’d have to rush this process so that's the reason why
The hubby's now in hospital, a drip stuck in his hand
The romance I'd imagined just hadn't gone as planned
I’d forgot to cook the chicken, I felt sorry for my fella
In my attempt to please him I'd given him salmonella

About this poem

I write comedy poems loosely based on actual events or events I can imagine happening. The below was written in response to my husband asking if we are doing anything special for valentine's day.
