The Guilt

I trust you
Like you trust me
Of course, that's my right
My happiness, my posterity

I let you in
To allow you to change
But you blew it away
Yeah, all into my face

I could pretend it's not real
I could lie to myself
'Cause I really don't know how to feel
After you were to whom I knelt

You changed our ways of life
You changed the thoughts in our style
We made way for your endless fight
But yet, you made us walk the mile

I hate you, for who you are
And who you have become
I thought the old days were over
I thought the old you was done

I understand why you ran
I know now who you are
But I won't find your feet in the sand
Or in the crowds of Nascar

You'll never know how much you hurt us
How much you gave us your betrayal
Sure, maybe before the people, you're untouched
Oh, wait until everyone hears both sides of the tale

If I made you believe
That the guilt wouldn't get to you inside
Then, like I trusted you,
Trust me

I lied.

About this poem

"Guilt" was a poem I wrote in the week following my 16th birthday party, when an adult family friend stole the money I received as a gift ($75). He and his family were going through a rough financial patch and had been living with us for about a month. During the events of the party, I'd left my wallet and belongs on the stairs. Unfortunately, he was the only person who lingered around that area throughout the night. The theft wasn't discovered until the following morning, when he passed the blame to one of my friends who stayed the night. Within a matter of days, things escalated, and he eventually stole my mother's car, robbed her computer store, and another retail shop locally. His wife was determined to have helped him rob the store, as my mother had given her the only other spare key. The day I wrote this poem (Halloween 2006) was the day he was apprehended and imprisoned, where he remained for more than a decade.
