My father lies down and sleeps.

A J C 1958 (Swansea, MA)

As my father lies sleeping.

He gave me life and kept me warm through all the storms. Now here he lies with his arms beneath his head, and as I look, he has fallen cold and dead. I feel his lips, and they are cold, pale, and still. So I feel this wrist; there is no pulse, and I can't hear his heart beating. He taught me a lot, and he was very smart. His heart still beats inside of me. So I sit by the mighty oak tree. I look up at the clouds floating by, and I can see his face as I cry. But he will always be my father, and I will always be his son. He is the only one.

    Feedback:

This poem beautifully captures the emotional depth of losing a father and the immense impact he had on the narrator's life. The imagery of the father lying peacefully and the sense of loss experienced by the narrator are both vivid and poignant. The metaphor of the father's heart still beating inside the narrator is particularly touching and emphasizes the lasting legacy of a parent's love and guidance.

    Improvement suggestions:

To enhance the flow and structure of the poem, consider breaking up some of the longer sentences into shorter, more concise phrases. This will help maintain the reader's engagement and create a smoother rhythm throughout the poem. Additionally, exploring different poetic devices such as metaphors, similes, or symbolism could add another layer of depth and complexity to the piece. Experimenting with varying line lengths or incorporating repetition of certain phrases could also help to further emphasize the central themes and emotions conveyed in the poem. Overall, continue to build on the powerful emotions and themes you have already established to create an even more impactful and resonant piece of writing.
