feeding into my addiction problems

Leah Sweeney 2008 (calgary)

you remind me of alcohol.
The smell,
bittersweet.
The taste
intimidating at first
but soothing once you become familiar
with it.
The burn,
It hurts.
but it's a good hurt
At least,
It is hurt that I willingly choose
to inflict upon myself.
The euphoria
Just like my first sip of alcohol,
The first taste of you I got,
I felt ways I'd never felt before.
The feeling was addicting,
feeling like i was on top of the world
I wanted to feel this way forever,
this feeling I'd been searching for
my whole life.
The withdrawal
The way you always had me wanting more.
The deficiency I suffered
without you.
The way I would have done anything
just for one last sip of you.
The depression
oh, being away from you
I became
so very depressed.
I was hopeless.
I was nobody without you.

You remind me of alcohol,
perhaps maybe that's why
I spend my nights drinking in excess,
tearing myself apart,
downing the bottle, until I make myself sick.
Hoping it will somehow
bring me back
bring me close
to you.
