Shattered Mirror, Shattered Society

Shattered Mirror, Shattered Society

Ruffling of a grocery bag of snacks,
Saying no to any mention of food,
How many days has it been since I last ate something…filling?

If it’s not healthy, I can’t eat it.
I mustn’t or the girl in of the mirror,
Will distort back into that monster.
Scream those horrible sounds,
The bickering and harshness of my own doing,
My words are my knives,
My thoughts are the cutlery.

The painful tremors,
Lightheadedness,
Lying in the dark,
Blinds drawn,
Fighting the urge to eat.

What’s another day?

A few days past I should be okay,
I have my grocery bag of snacks after all,
Working out for hours everyday,
What could possibly go wrong?

According to societal standards,
I must have big breasts, a butt that turns heads, small hips that sway,
But never a soft tummy or muscular physique.

You must be a women,
Composed of feminine energy,
Smell of perfume,
Colors and different shades of make-up,
A hour glass body, no love handles, muffin bottoms,
No miss perfections.

Even if our bone structures don’t work that way?
You’re saying we must all have “that” body?

We are women after all,
The image of a “bad” body shouldn’t exist?
Our society and unfortunately a number of men and even some women don’t preach that.

Self-love?
Freedom to be ourselves and whoever we aspire to be, no matter how our body looks or should look like?

Oh~how I can’t wait to rip my contract that bounds my conscious and better judgment.

Let my body be free of any chains that hold me down.
Break the rules of society’s standards,
They’re obsolete.

Beauty has always existed within you.
Self-love can be found,
But only if you’re willing to cross over busted down trails, wilted flowers, overgrown shrubbery, long branches of thorns that stick to your legs and clothes
Until you find your way.

I didn’t say it would be easy.
In this life, it never was supposed to be this difficult,
Perhaps we’ll be the cracks in the darkness,
Letting in the natural sun light

Pull the sheet off the mirror,
Carefully pick up the pieces,
Pick yourself back up,
Your journey of self-love and compassion is far from over.
This is just the beginning.

About this poem

Sharing my own personal experience and story about body dsymorphia and eating disorder of anorexia nervosa. Along with my thoughts about society’s beauty standards about women’s bodies. My journey through self-hatred, self-love, self-harm, and mental health in general has been difficult to put it lightly. I want to bring more awareness and hopefully touch some hearts.

I’m not published but I do have a passion for poetry. I wrote a lot of poems though out the years and keep them away and never bother to show anyone my work. I decided that I’m ready to put my personal poems out there! more…
