I choose

Everything tastes good on an empty stomach.
Even the humidity in the air, when your mouth is dry.
Those who pick and choose and reject and refuse,
They may never know the sweet taste of morning dew.

Like a bird sat on the verge of daylight,
That tomorrow may bring rain, which may grow a grain, so that this wait may not be in vain.
Everything tastes good on an empty stomach.

Yes, those with plenty more say I am in- sane.
I have been told that there is no taste in the morning dew.

I had been told about sweet berries and cherries and plenty more.
All I knew was the perfect bitter taste of grapevine leaves.

The sound of a spring and the fresh water it brings.
The taste of berries and sweets may never compete,
With the fresh leave of a grapevine. All I hope for is an empty stomach.

I promise!
I will never miss the morning dew. That life I shall pick and choose…
My money and status, I shall sacrifice and refuse
For where I am grateful, would be a life worth living.
Because everything tastes better on an empty stomach.

About this poem

This poem has been inspired the simplicity of living in a village. Without any greed for status and wealth, a person with very little can enjoy life a lot more than a person running a race of urban life.

Aisha Bibi

I write short poems as a hobby and to capture my feelings. My first poem, was written in year in secondary school and was published in a book - The Power of Poetry (Edited by Shobhna Patel) 2014, the poem was called Reach for the Stars. I have since written much but rarely feel that my work is worthy of submission. I have had interest in my sample manuscript from Olympiapublisher but never completed my work at the time. more…
