Sculptures in Relief

Aditi Anand 1973 (Chandigarh)

December 23

We are our own, works in progress, sculptures in relief, as we scrape,
Emerging from a slab, slowly chiseling, each day, a more finished shape.
Not weak at the ankle as often sculptures in the round would be,
The strong background walks back, as the evolving form sets free.

Isn’t life also somewhat like this?
Freedom within boundaries, voluntarily we try and add what’s amiss.
We forge our own identities, in time, as the original slab recedes,
Forming our unwavering subconscious, a backbone holding us tall, endless strength it feeds.

The beauty certainly lies, in the eye of the beholder,
As in art forms, applies even to our “all life experiences” folder.
Realise this more as we wisen with age, like good wine,
A step closer to discovering our inner core, so beautifully divine.

Hammers, chisels, rasps, simple yet essential sculpting tools,
These rest in the hands of our endless imagination, that rapidly spools.
Creation starts from a characterless piece of stone,
Each stroke of genius, nudges out the extra, reveals the hidden, character is ever so slowly grown.

As we remain this work in progress, sculptures in relief,
The mould we hold ourselves into, is made up of our intrinsic belief.
The rest can all be manipulated and mutated as we go along,
To reveal the unique magic, of our inner being, so deep and so very strong!

About this poem

A reflection on the constantly changing beings that we are, how the past frames the present and provides the background for the beauty of the now to emerge in relief!
