Rosettes

Cas Wilson 1999 (United States)

It's a room trapped in Time's palace
with crystal rosettes on the wall
and etched patterns
from some metamorphosis
of a beginning
thousands of years ago.
I can put my fingers on our history
and trace it,
knowing the way it curves,
staggers, and breaks,
but always connects
again.

The rosettes shudder under my hand,
an eager gemstone foxtrot,
and they're tracing over me too,
erasing what I was,
engraving me with
their instructions on
how to use the thing that would make
the doors of heaven burst open.

Little trickles of brightness
live on the surface of my skin
telling me the secrets
of how I will change with the patterns too.
They will rewrite me,
and I will write for myself
a brave new world.
