Unbreakable Love (Lost Pets)

In our home, where silence softly lays,
We keep treasures that don't wither or fray.
Pictures that capture, in colors so sly,
Frozen in time, they never die.

In a glassy tank, fish that never need to dine,
Gliding on batteries, in a dance so fine.
A tranquil spectacle, yet only a lie,
In their silent swim, they never die.

A teddy bear, plush and mute,
Sits in the corner, so cute, yet astute.
No tears to wipe, no sorrowful sigh,
In its fabric embrace, it will never die.

The vase holds flowers, ever so fair,
Petals of silk, with nary a care.
No sun to seek, no water supply,
In their eternal spring, they don't die.

A figurine of a bird, wings forever still,
Perched in quiet, a testament of skill.
No song to sing, under the sky,
In its painted world, it cannot die.

In these objects, a solace we find,
Echoes of a peace, a balm for the mind.
For twice we've loved, and twice bid goodbye,
To pets we cherished, who were born to die.

So now we turn to the unfading, the undying,
In them, no risk of leaving, no crying.
Beautiful, unchanging, they meet the eye,
Their allure, unspoken – they cannot die.

But deep within, where memories hide,
Lingers the pain of the ones who've died.
For all the beauty that money can buy,
It's the beating heart we miss, and we can't say good-bye.

About this poem

There is all kinds of pain when it comes to loss. However I believe that the loss of a pet is the most painful. I believe it is because a pets love is pure, not governed by anything. However, when you loose both - it tears at your soul. "Squirt" congestive heart failure, and "Ezzy" suicide by not eating and died (we were unaware at the time the pets do this) as we could not tell her why her mate would not return

Thank you. Aside from Squirts heart condition, unbeknownst to us, a silent suicide by his mate (of 21yrs) caught us off guard, We later found out her lack of appetite was she was trying to cross over too. I think that was more painful. If we had only known at the time. Thank you again for reading.
