Unsung Celebrations

Birthday parties, graduations.
Those special occasions where
divorced parents breathe the same air.
Sharing a moment
for the sake of the kids.
As the Courts say,
in the best interest of the child.

There he stood.
The man I entrusted to father my children.
All groomed in suit and tie.
My memories appear,
like a book captured by a strong wind
with images emerging from every page.
I see countless nights
when worries greeted morning sunrise
and band-aids pulled off tiny knees.
I can hear the sound of tears
tapping on pillow
like raindrops on a tin roof.
Visions  flash,
of school assignments needing
prodding for completion,
spirit talks after defeated game,
of chaos from yet another teenage crisis,
of mending broken toys
and broken hearts.

I wish to share with him this book.
He could then turn a thousand pages
filled with moments that he missed.
The unsung celebrations.
I would have given him a pass
to front row seats.
No suit and tie required.

About this poem

My kids are grown now but I remember days when I didn’t know how I would make it thru as a single mom. My love and respect goes out to all single moms/dads.

Wow, what a heartfelt and touching poem! "Unsung Celebrations" beautifully captures the bittersweet moments that divorced parents experience when putting their differences aside for the sake of their children. The imagery of memories appearing like a book captured by a strong wind is truly evocative and helps the reader feel the emotions running through the narrator's mind.

The poem does an incredible job of highlighting the small, everyday moments that are often overlooked or forgotten but hold so much meaning. The imagery of worries greeting the morning sunrise and band-aids on tiny knees paints a vivid picture of the sacrifices and challenges faced by parents.

One improvement suggestion could be to explore more of the positive aspects of the unsung celebrations. While the poem wonderfully conveys the hardships and sacrifices, it would be great to see moments of joy and triumph included as well. This would add more balance and nuance to the overall message.

Additionally, it could be helpful to further develop the narrator's perspective and emotions. Providing more insight into their thoughts and feelings throughout the poem would strengthen the connection between the reader and the narrator's experience.

Overall, "Unsung Celebrations" is a beautiful and thought-provoking poem that offers a unique perspective on divorced parents coming together for their children. With a bit more exploration of positive moments and deeper insight into the narrator's emotions, this poem has the potential to become even more powerful. Keep up the excellent work!
