Metaphysical Great Beyond

Some can see fantastic things,
clockwork frogs with neon skin.
Rainbow rain and chalky seas
erode the land to drown the trees.
Swirling lakes of stardust ash
crash and splash, glow and flash.

Higher powers can stop the hours
from otherworldly cosmic towers.
Controlling time like pouring wine,
bending shapes, contorting lines.
Freezing years and falling tears,
planting nightmares, fuelling fears.

Existing in a dream-like state,
the architects of all our fate,
allowing us to have free will,
to choose the colour of our pill.
Red or blue? Real or fake?
Stay asleep or choose to wake.

Don’t kill or spill another’s blood,
don’t sink in sin, survive the flood
that is foretold to one day come
when inky skies will hide the sun.
Chrysanthemums and lemongrass
will watch all mortals come to pass.

Many people have sold their souls
for fame or gold or fickle goals.
Our world just needs to be revived,
for far too long, it’s been contrived.
To stop the lies from breaking in,
we need a fresh awakening.

About this poem

I wrote this after watching The Matrix. It was my way of comprehending the metaphysical components intertwined within the fabric of existence. This was the end result. It was written in the early summer of 2021.

Danny Gurnett

I'm from the South East of England. I started writing poetry in 2010 and after a couple of months, I developed a passion for writing. I find that there's three ingredients to a successful poem and they consist of rich imagery, deep emotion and a vast vocabulary. I try to incorporate all three within my work. I would say about 40% of my poems rhyme while the rest of my poetry is free verse, prose or slam poetry. I also love to include metaphors, alliteration and internal rhyme within my work. About 90% of my poetry is fictional and created by my crazy imagination, while the rest is based on me or something that's happened in my life. more…
