Silence

Silly me, falling for you,
Imagining it was mutual.
Love, unconditional, was all I offered.
Every ounce of it, you drank greedily.
Now with your thirst sated, you leave.
Casually. Carelessly. Cowardly.
Everywhere, the lingering echo of your silence.

About this poem

Breakups are never easy, even when welcome, but ghosting is particularly cruel. I wrote this acrostic poem as a way to communicate the physical weight of that singular word: silence.

Celeste Fritsche

While I often dabbled in writing poetry growing up, I have recently found a new passion for doing so. When not at my desk job, or walking one of my dogs, I am typically writing poems, painting, wood burning, hand etching glass, or occasionally working with resin. I love to create, and I hope that my creations put a little bit of beauty back into this often dark and broken world. more…

Hey! I didn’t realize your poem was acrostic … clever. Below are the notes I took on your poem as I read through the October collection:

“Wow! A simple but exceedingly powerful presentation of a love taken advantage of. Every well chosen word puzzled itself perfectly to express the poem’s grim and inexcusable picture. The echoless silence the poem ends with leaves one feeling the painful and palpable vacancy.”
