I Hurt an Angel
Heaven sent me an angel,
To heal and take care of me.
It wasn’t something I requested,
And did not expect to see.
She didn’t have a halo,
Or soft and fluffy wings.
I didn’t hear that sound,
That is heard when an angel sings.
We laughed and cried together,
We shared our deepest thoughts.
I felt so safe and wanted,
But still afraid of love’s costs.
She asked to stay forever,
My shallow thoughts pushed her away.
She left without saying goodbye,
Surely due to her dismay.
Many years later
I realized what I had done.
I had hurt a living angel,
With a heart as big as the sun.
Can I be forgiven,
Is there a way to make this right.
Will I be allowed into heaven,
If I die in my sleep tonight.
About this poem
I was recovering from a bad relationship that had triggered dark depression inside me. This special person showed up in my life and was so good to me allowing me to heal and regain a foothold in life. She was one of the kindest, giving persons that I have ever known. She wanted to be with me and I was more interested in "playing the field" (putting it nicely) and risking more bad relationships. I couldn't figure out why she stopped calling and wouldn't answer my calls. Eventually I realized what I had done and that it is highly likely that I caused in her the very pain that she had helped me heal in myself. more »
