EL PASO 2019

Out in the west Texas town of El Paso
High desert country, a land I adore
A bad man from Dallas arrived uninvited
And left far too many dead on the floor

Convinced The Great Replacement Theory was true
(with all its zany false lore)
He drove through the night, to old El Paso
To kill Mexicans and even the score.

It was hot that day at El Paso’s WALMART, on Gateway West Blvd,
near the Cielo Vista Mall.
After the long drive the shooter had a bite
And reconned some of his victims soon doomed to fall

Later recounted, folks thought he’d driven on
After his meal at McDonald’s that day
Instead, he went back to his car
Geared up with plenty of ammo and got his AK

He started his spree outside in the lot
Juan y Nicholosa Velasquez were the first on his list
When he shot them, still in their car
Unknowing, they had just shared their last kiss

Out thru the back door of WALMART they ran
To escape the 7.62 mm lethal bees
Some escaped but most died
Pleading and bleeding, down on their knees

Leonardo Campos, Raul Flores, Aldolpho Cerros Hernandes with wife Sarita
died in the store
They were not able to reach safety
They perished, along with so many more.

Teresa Sanches, at 82, was there with her girlfriends
But they were all shot
While shopping the sales Rosa and Rosemary survived, Teresa did not.

Lazaro Ponce, a heroic homeless man,
Without hesitation, rushed into the store
In spite of the AK still spitting out rounds
He saved three and treated many more

While the Army’s Glendon Oakley
Helped the kids next door
Adria Gonzales and Gilbert Serna led many to safety then went back for more.

When it was all over the killer
Calmly walked out the door,
As he surveyed his handiwork,
The many bloody bodies, strewn willy-nilly on the floor.

Then he got back in his car
And drove a few more blocks
And surrendered to police saying,
“I am the shooter,” you must put me in the stocks.

Ninety life sentences he received
For his deplorable actions that day
He destroyed many innocent lives
So in prison he will stay

But don’t worry, it’s all over now, I wish that I could say
But the indoctrination he received online
Is still widely broadcasting today

That ensures that this isn’t the end
With yet more precious lives we must pay,
Until we stand up, what we witnessed in El Paso
Will soon occur, every single day.

I love that this sad, poignant poem honors the innocent victims of a hate crime. It shows the danger and damage done by lies propagated on the Internet pushed by creating fear and divisive hatred. It warns that this is not the end, for the root cause continues and grows. It's an important message that seems so hard to get across in this climate of hate and greed.
